Understanding License SuspensionIn Virginia, unlike some other states, your driver's license is immediately and automatically suspended for seven days after you are arrested for DUI/DWI. However, after this "cooling off period," you will get your license back while your criminal case is pending. If you are actually convicted of DUI/DWI, your license may be suspended for a year or more. However, you do have a right to request a restricted license, allowing you to drive to work and other important locations.
